About KCMS Inc

Our Mission

“To combat isolation, loneliness and depression by improving overall mental and physical health.”

How We Got Started

Although there had been some interest expressed in establishing a Community Men’s Shed in the Kendenup area for some time it was not until a newly arrived resident offered his private shed to the community in July 2024 that the idea became a reality.

That resident who had considerable men’s shed experience called for a public meeting in September 2024 to gauge interest.  24 local residents attended the meeting and formed a steering committee to develop a Community Shed which whilst preserving the Men’s Shed ethos of supporting men’s mental health and providing a common place for men to meet would also support a woman’s program by offering mixed days for woman and men.

The newly formed Kendenup Community and Men’s Shed became incorporated on 5th October 2024 and joined both the Australian Men’s Shed Association and the Western Australian Men’s Shed Association.

Since its formation the Kendenup Community and Men’s Shed Inc.’s membership has risen to 42 paid up members who participate in a wide range of activities.

Our Objectives

The Kendenup Community and Men’s Shed Inc. is open to both women and men. We are registered with the Australian Tax Office as a health promotion charity with exemption from GST and income tax.  As a community organisation our goals are:

  1. To address the issues of men’s mental, physical, and emotional health and wellbeing in the community.
  2. To engage the elderly, differently-abled, youth, veterans, indigenous and other groups of men from Kendenup and the surrounding area and to specifically address any issues of loneliness, isolation and depression.
  3. To support the social interaction of men in transitional periods (e.g. Redundancy, Bereavement, Retirement, Ill Health, Relocation and Respite Care).
  4. To share, disseminate and preserve the skills, abilities and interests that are relevant to the community.
  5. To facilitate links between men and health-related agencies, family organisations and specialist health professionals within the community.
  6. To advocate the benefits of partnerships between men’s sheds and community.
  7. To develop a men’s shed which can operate on a cost-neutral basis, that is, its ongoing costs can be met or exceeded by its revenue.
  8. To initiate and continue activities of particular relevance to men.
  9. To provide strong social fabric for men experiencing isolation.

Women in the Shed.

Women are welcome at the KCMS Inc. as they are valued members of our community and we would like to welcome everyone who would like to contribute or take part in our shed activities. Everyone has skills and knowledge they can share  and we can all learn rom each other while enjoying a safe place to socialise and have fun. We maintain a “men only” session on Saturday mornings to continue the ethos of “men’s sheds.”

Our Future

Where We Are Going

The above floor plan is one of several proposals for the new Kendenup Community and Men’s Shed Inc.

In designing a new shed one must take into consideration  our current membership needs along with future proofing the design for the needs of members in the years ahead.

Although woodworking and metal work form the backbone of most Men’s Sheds in Australia and take up the majority of shed space available. The Kendenup Community and Men’s Shed will have varied needs with Lapidary, gardening, arts and crafts and games forming a large section of the sheds active membership.

There is much to be done before our new shed becomes a reality, however we hope whatever the final shed looks like it will become a focal point for Kendenup that provides lasting enjoyment for many years to come.
